The objective of Dialog Box was to bringing customers, partners, consultants and team members on a single platform for collaborative growth, learning and sharing and exploring new opportunities.

The panel for discussion comprised of three eminent individuals, General Ved Prakash Malikthe 19th Chief of Army, who has known extreme shades of adversity, as he led India through the Kargil War; Rahul Dravidthe former Indian cricketer and captain, widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket & known for his calm and calculated decision making skills in utmost pressure situation and New Zealander Mark Inglis, the first double amputee to conquer Mt Everest & is an exceptional example of grit, determination and self-motivation for overcoming the harshest situations to achieve the unparalleled  Panelist. The discussion was moderated by Padma Bhushan Shekhar Gupta, one of the most outstanding journalists of our time.

Speaking about his experiences from the Kargil War, General V.P. Malik, eulogised the valor and leadership skills displayed by the young officers during the war. On the occasion, Gen. Malik quoted lines from the letters written to his father by Major Padmapani Acharya, a gallant officer martyred during the war and was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, "don't worry about casualties father, it is the nature of this job, what better way to go than serving the country and its people." He said, this showed the unstinted commitment of Major Acharya to the mission. General Malik emphasised on the need for youngsters to be guided, motivated and led on the right path by their leaders and mentors. Planning is the most integral part of any success and excellence, he added.

Rahul Dravid reminisced the lessons he learnt on adversity from the historic test match played against Australia at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in the year 2000. As India's wickets kept falling in that test match, the one thing that me and VVS Laxman decided on to change the game and tame the Australians was to just play one ball at a time and the rest of it is history now, he said. Advising the audience on how to cope with adversity, Rahul Dravid said, when the going gets tough, it's important to slow down, relax, remain calm and take one thing at a time; persevere and remain focused, he added.

Pointing at a picture of him climbing Mt Everest with his prosthetic limbs, Mark Inglis said "When I look at that picture, I don't see a double amputee. I see a guy who won't get frostbite on his feet/legs!!" "Adversity is an opportunity to step up" he pointed out.

According to Tanla CMD Uday Reddy, "Every business, every leader and just about anybody in the world has had a brush with adversity. And each one of us has emerged from it in one way or the other. Tanla's story is one of excelling from adversity and emerging towards infinite possibility." Reddy said "We don't believe in the stars, we believe in a strategy." Today we look at adversity differently. After emerging from adversity, we look upon an adversity as an opportunity to grow." "I thank all those who believed in us even through the tough times, your support is our greatest strength" he added. "Excellence comes not only from being obsessed with the results, but primarily from loving what you do and having the discipline to do it every day, and put every effort to get better at it" said Reddy.

Responding to Moderator Shekhar Gupta query if he'd recommend entrepreneurs to take up adventure sports for learning on how to overcome adversity with grit and determination, Mark said "I'd put every cover page guy through mountaineering course." While General Malik on a lighter note, said, if he could, he'd "put every politician through the army."

The distinguished panel also collectively agreed that, one must have a sense of humor, a positive outlook and a healthy attitude to emerge out of adversity with excellence.

About Topic 'Excellence in Adversity'

The topic 'excellence in adversity' is very close to Tanla as it resonates with the Tanla story. Founded in 2000, Tanla was the leader in mobile payments, solutions and VAS services. Tanla is the first mobile solutions company to be listed on NSE and BSE. Tanla partnered with then giants such as Nokia and Blackberry which together made up to 90% of the smartphone market share. At the peak of its success, Tanla couldn't foresee the challenges of being in an extremely dynamic industry such as mobile technology.  Nokia and Blackberry's technological prowess was overpowered by Samsung and iPhone, which took over the mobile industry. Tanla was unprepared and was caught unaware of the wave of change in the industry, and as a result, Tanla's business took a hit.

Tanla 's management team had the choice of either changing the line of business or confronting the challenges head on. Tanla chose to confront the challenges of the dynamic industry. Believed in its ability, passion, and team and had the urge to succeed. With greater preparation, stronger business cases, evolved technology, and with much grit, determination and passion, Tanla is today back into a really great form. Tanla is currently the largest A2P messaging platform in the world and processes upto 5 billion messages per year. Tanla's own experience of emerging from adversity inspires it to look for stories of 'excellence in adversity' such as the stories of General VP Malik, Rahul Dravid and Mark Inglis –
