Pavitrotsavams Begins on Religious Note

Tirumala, 14 August 2016: The annual three day festival, Pavitrotsavams commenced in Tirumala temple from August 14-16 in a religious manner.

As a part of the religious fete, the ritwiks performed Snapana Tirumanjanam to the utsavarulu amidst chanting of Veda Mantras.

This is a periodical ritual which is derived from the combination of two words Pavitra (holy) and utsava (festival).

This utsava is penitential as well as propitiatory and its main objective is to get rid of the evil that might have been caused due to omissions and commissions in the performance of various rituals throughout the year. And hence this festival is also known as Dosha Nivaarana (error correction),Sarva Yajna Phalapradha (The One ritual that equals the holiness of rites all year long),Sarva Doshopasamana (Removal of all errors), Sarva Tushtikara,   Sarvakaamapradha, and Sarvalokasantida.

In Tirumala, the Pavitrotsavam ritual is conducted on Sravana Suddha Dasami day. The origin of Pavitrotsavam in Tirumala dates back to 1463 A.D. as per the stone inscription found  in the first prakara of the temple. The festival is believed to have been conducted till 1562 A.D. after which the ritual was stopped.

TTD revived the festival and has been observing this fete since 1962. TTD has cancelled all arjitha sevas during these three days.

On the first day, after performing puja in yagashala in connection with this festival, Pavitra Pratishtha is performed by the vedic pundits.

TTD EO Dr D Sambasiva Rao, Temple DyEO Sri Rama Rao, Temple Peishkar Sri R Selvam and devotees took part.
