Koil Alwar Tirumanjanam in Sri Vari Temple











Tirumala, 3 January 2017: In connection with Vaikuntha Ekadasi on January 8, Koil Alwar Tirumanajanm, the temple cleansing activity observed in Sri Tirumala Temple on Tuesday.

Significance: Koil Alwar means 'Holy Shrine'. Tirumanjanam is cleansing.The main purpose of performing Koil Alwar Tirumanjanam is purification of sanctum sanctorum and temple premises. 

Procedure: During the ceremony all the Murtis and other articles are removed from sanctum sanctorum and the mula murti is covered with water- proof covering. The entire Garbhalayam, including floors, ceilings and walls are then cleaned and brushed well with plenty of water. The whole place is then smeared with Vermilion, Turmeric, Camphor, Sandal paste, Saffron, Kichiligadda mixture which acts as disinfectant. The covering on the main deity is then removed and the deities, deepam and other articles are replaced inside. Purificatory pujas and Naivedyams are the offered to the deity and then pilgrims are allowed for darshan. This takes place between 6am to 10am in Tirumala temple.

 When is this performed: This ceremony is performed strictly as per the tenets of Vaikhanasa Agama and is conducted four times in a year before Ugadi, Anivara Asthanam, Vaikunta Eakadasi and annual Brahmotsavams.
