The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has started functioning the emergency operations centres at Sabarimala to meet any emergency situation. The EOC centre as it is called will function at Pamba and Sannidhanam with its center at Nilakkal. The center will work round the clock. An emergency operations center (EOC) is a central command and control facility responsible for carrying out the principles of emergency preparedness and emergency management, or disaster management functions at a strategic level during an emergency, and ensuring the continuity of operation.
An EOC in Sabarimala has 18 staff among 6 of them are technically good at handling any emergency situations. Apart from them, a representative from Police, Fire Force, and Health Department will be on duty at the EOCs. In Nilakkal, the service of a Hazard Analyst will help in the coordination of the activities. The EOC will work 24 hours and in case of emergency, they will coordinate with other departments to tackle the situation.
Each of the EOCs have been equipped with modern facilities for communication and information transfer. They will also keep a tab on the number of devotees coming and returning from Sabarimala. The data will be made and kept at the EOCs. They will also forecast weather, predict the volume of rain, water occupancy in the dams will be done in the EOCs. The centers will also have the phone numbers of the various departments and their resource inventories.
