Hyderabad. Dec 21: Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan has called for new technology to make agriculture sustainable.
She said that ensuring
environment-friendly and sustainable agriculture that brings profits to the
farmers is a major challenge and this calls for intensive research and
innovations in agriculture technologies.
The Governor was virtually
inaugurating the sixth national conference of the Agricultural Scientific
Tamil, organised by the Agricultural Scientific Tamil Society, New Delhi.
She stated that
agriculture has been part of our culture and it was more like a way of life for
centuries in our country.
“It is essential that we
must continue to ensure food security to a massive 130 crore population of the
country through our sustained efforts towards the sustainable agricultural
practices,” she added.
Referring to the series of
reforms and initiatives in the agriculture sector by the Central government,
Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan stated that the farmers’ income would be doubled in
near future with the effective implementation of schemes, programmes and
reforms.
Elaborating on the importance of agriculture in our country, the
Governor pointed out that the GDP growth generated in agriculture is proved to
be twice effective in reducing poverty than the GDP growth in other sectors.
Agriculture and its allied sectors are offering employment to around
half of the working people in our country and to ensure employment. In order to
alleviate poverty, she said that the agriculture must become profitable and
sustainable.
The Governor exhorted the
agriculture scientists and academics to revise the agriculture education curriculum
so as to make it contemporary and contextual specific to the regions with
different soil and climate conditions.
Dr. Tamilisai
Soundararajan appreciated the efforts of the Agricultural Scientific Tamil
Society efforts in promoting agricultural knowledge in Tamil and other regional
languages.
