Sanjeevaraya Hanuman - Unique to Vontimitta

Sri Anjaneya Swamy temple located in Vontimitta of Kadapa district is being worshipped by the devotees as ''Sanjeevaraya''.

The legend of the Sanjeevaraya temple says that the appearance of Sri Ramachandra Murty in the Vontimitta temple holding a Kodanda (Bow) along with Sita Devi and Lakshmana Swamy flanked on either side, is believed to have occurred when they were in the exile period.

At that time, Sri Hanuman had not yet met Sri Ramachandra. That is why Anjaneya Swamy is not present in the Vontimitta temple which is a unique feature in this ancient temple.

The Puranas also states that Anjaneya Swamy has Himself said that Vontimitta Ramalayam has come down to earth as Bhooloka Vaikuntham, and that He will serve His Master Sri Rama forever and that's why He is standing opposite the Vontimitta temple in a separate shrine and blessing devotees as 'Sanjeevaraya'.

According to the legend, when the Vanara Sena died in the war between Sri Rama and Ravanasura while Lakshmana Swamy was fainted, Sri Anjaneya crossed the Himalayas twice and went to Mahendragiri to bring four types of Sanjeevani herbs(the elixir of life).

Anjaneya Swamy is also located on the bank of the pond. Devotees believe that this Anjaneya Swamy protects the devotees from fear of death, from inclement weather and others.

As He brought the celestial herbs located on the divine mount Sanjeevani, He is revered as Sanjeevarya.
